If your Static Proxy appears to be in a different location than expected, it doesn't necessarily mean the proxy was assigned incorrectly. IP geolocation information comes from third-party databases, and different providers may report different locations for the same IP.
This article applies to Rayobyte's Static Data Center and Static ISP Proxy services. If you're troubleshooting Residential Proxy targeting instead, see our Residential Proxy troubleshooting resources.
➡️ Understanding Proxy Location
Why does an IP lookup site show a different location?
IP geolocation services maintain their own databases for determining where an IP address is located. These databases don't always agree with each other, and updates may not appear across every provider at the same time.
As a result, the same proxy IP may appear in one city or region with one provider and somewhere different with another.
Rayobyte doesn't control how third-party websites classify or update proxy IP locations.
What's the difference between physical location and IP geolocation?
Physical location refers to where the infrastructure serving the proxy is located.
IP geolocation refers to the location associated with an IP address by a particular geolocation database or website.
These don't always match exactly. For many use cases, what matters most is how your target website or application recognizes the proxy IP.
➡️ Checking a Location Mismatch
How should I verify my proxy's location?
If an IP lookup service shows an unexpected location, we recommend checking the proxy with more than one reputable geolocation provider.
Different providers may return different results, so a mismatch from a single lookup service isn't always enough to determine that there's a problem with the proxy.
More importantly, test the proxy directly with the website or application you're planning to use. If the target recognizes the proxy correctly and your workflow works as expected, a different location shown by a separate IP lookup site may not affect your use case.
What if the country is wrong?
A country-level mismatch is more significant than a difference between nearby cities or regions.
If multiple reputable geolocation providers consistently identify your Static Proxy as being in a different country than the location assigned to your service, contact our Support team so we can review the IP.
What if only the city or region is different?
City and region classifications can vary between geolocation providers. One database may identify an IP with one city while another associates the same IP with a nearby city or broader region.
If a particular city or region is critical to your workflow, test the proxy directly with your target website or application to see how it identifies the IP.
➡️ Static ISP Proxies
Why might my Static ISP Proxy show a different location?
Static ISP Proxies use ISP-associated IP addresses, but third-party geolocation providers still maintain their own location records for those IPs.
Because of this, an IP lookup service may show a location that differs from the location associated with your Rayobyte service.
The same troubleshooting approach applies: compare multiple geolocation providers and test the proxy directly with your intended target.
➡️ Replacing a Static Proxy
Should I replace a proxy because an IP checker shows the wrong location?
Not necessarily.
If the proxy works correctly with your intended website or application, a different location shown by a third-party lookup service may not affect your workflow.
If the location discrepancy does affect your use case, eligible Static Proxy services may have replacement credits available through the Proxy Dashboard.
Keep in mind that replacing the proxy gives you a different IP, but it doesn't guarantee that every third-party geolocation provider will report identical location information for the replacement.
➡️ Need Help?
If you've checked multiple geolocation providers and the location discrepancy is affecting your actual use case, our Support team can take a closer look.
When contacting us, please include:
- The affected proxy IP
- The location assigned to the proxy in your Rayobyte Dashboard
- The location being reported
- The geolocation provider or target website reporting the mismatch
- A screenshot of the result, if available
