Seeing an error while using your Residential Proxies? The first step is figuring out whether the response is coming from Rayobyte or from the website you're trying to access.
Rayobyte proxy errors happen before your request reaches the target website. Responses such as a website 403, 429, CAPTCHA, or access-denied page usually mean the proxy connection succeeded, but the target website rejected or restricted the request.
Use the guidance below to identify the issue and determine what to try next.
➡️ Common Residential Proxy Errors
What does a 407 error mean?
A 407 means Rayobyte does not recognize the account for the request.
One of the most common causes is an empty Residential bandwidth balance. When your balance reaches zero, the account is suspended and the proxy may respond as though the credentials are no longer recognized.
If you receive a 407:
- Check that you still have available Residential bandwidth.
- Verify your proxy username and password.
- If you're using IP authorization, confirm that your current public IP is authorized.
- If you're using targeting or session options, confirm that they are being applied correctly.
What does a 451 error mean?
A 451 means the destination is blocked by Rayobyte's network policies.
Some destination categories and individual domains are restricted by default. If you have a legitimate business need to access a restricted destination, contact Support so we can review the use case and let you know whether access can be approved.
What does a 551 error mean?
A 551 means no currently available Residential exit matches the targeting criteria in your request.
This is most common with narrow targeting such as a ZIP code, ASN, device OS, city, or a combination of several criteria.
Retrying the exact same targeting combination may not resolve the issue if no matching Residential device is currently online. Try loosening the narrowest targeting option instead.
For a step-by-step troubleshooting process, see Why is my targeted Residential Proxy not connecting?.
What does a 556 error mean?
A 556 means the request rate has exceeded the allowed limit.
Reduce the rate of your requests before trying again. If your application uses multiple workers or threads, make sure the combined traffic isn't creating a larger request rate than expected.
What do 504, 552, 554, or 557 errors mean?
These are generally temporary errors and can be retried.
504or552— Rayobyte attempted multiple Residential exits but the connection could not be completed.554or557— A temporary failure occurred within the proxy network.
Residential exits come from real devices, so individual connections can occasionally disappear or fail. A later request may succeed with another available exit.
If 504 or 552 continues to occur only with one particular website while other websites work normally, the issue may instead be related to how that target responds to the available exits.
For the complete and most current error reference, see Errors & Retries in Rayobyte Docs.
➡️ Website Errors vs. Proxy Errors
I'm getting a 403, 429, CAPTCHA, or "Access Denied." Is my proxy broken?
Not necessarily. These responses usually come from the target website rather than the Rayobyte proxy network.
If the same proxy can successfully reach other websites, the connection itself is likely working and the issue is specific to the target.
Websites can make access decisions using much more than an IP address, including request frequency, browser behavior, cookies, account activity, headers, JavaScript execution, and other signals.
Try reducing your request rate and testing several Residential exits. You should also confirm whether the issue occurs only with that particular website.
Rayobyte cannot guarantee compatibility with every third-party website or prevent a target from changing its own access controls.
➡️ Connection Resets & Timeouts
Why does my connection sometimes reset or time out?
Residential exits are real consumer devices and can disconnect while a request is in progress. Because of this, occasional connection failures are expected and applications using Residential Proxies should be prepared to retry temporary failures.
If timeouts or connection resets happen consistently:
- Test without targeting to see whether narrow availability is contributing to the issue.
- Test multiple websites to determine whether the problem is target-specific.
- Check whether the issue occurs only during sticky sessions.
- Record the approximate time of a failed request before contacting Support.
➡️ Need Help?
If the issue continues after basic troubleshooting, our Support team can help investigate.
When contacting us, please include:
- The error code or exact error message
- The approximate date and time of a recent failed request
- The website or endpoint you were trying to access
- Any targeting or session options being used
- Whether other websites work through the same proxy connection
- The protocol you're using, such as HTTP/HTTPS or SOCKS5
Important: Never send your proxy password, API keys, cookies, or other sensitive credentials in a support ticket. Mask them in screenshots, logs, and connection examples.
